The formidable Warriors face off the choker Zouks
The last season’s runner up’s Guyana Amazon Warriors kick start their campaign against the new St Lucia Zouks in the second match of the CPL 2019. Warriors are loaded up with firepower batsmen, along with a lot of international experience in the bowling line up this season. The major additions to the side are Pooran, Shabad Khan and Kemo Paul and they join the already star-studded line up of Hetmyer, Tahir, and Green. On the other side, with the change in the management and the name from Stars to Zouks, the side from St Lucia has retained the core group of Sammy, Cornwall, Fletcher, and Willaims. But they lost few powerful batsmen, which has made their batting line up slim in this season. They have tried to mitigate it with signing the likes of Fawad Ahmed, Vijeon and Perera.
Guyana Amazon Warriors, Possible XI: Chandrapaul Hemraj, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Shoaib Malik, Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Chris Green (C), Ben Laughin, Romario Shepherd, Imran Tahir.
St Lucia Zouks, Possible XI: Andre Fletcher (wk), John Campbell, Andre McCarthy, Rahkeem Cornwall, Najibullah Zardan, Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy (C), Hardus Viljoen, Fawad Ahmed, Kesrick Williams, Krishmar Santokie.
The surface at Providence is usually known for producing sporting games. But as it is just the start of the season, batting surface is likely to be in store. The forecast is quite clear for the day with temperatures hovering in the mid 20°C during the match.
The veteran leg spinner hasn’t had much success in England until the past few weeks. He has chipped in with 10 wickets in the last 5 T20 Blast games for Surrey. It may not have helped Surrey to make it into the Quarterfinals, but the form he found might come in handy for Warriors.
The leading wicket-taker of the 2018 season is coming into the season on the back of a decent form in the recently concluded Canada T20 League. Having been played for Knight Riders in the previous season, he has come into the St. Lucia Zouks where he is going to be the main man for the side.
The overseas pro has an important part to play for St Lucia in the season as the side is slim when comes to batting. He will have to play the role of the crucial floater and the finisher, which he is known for around various T20 leagues.
It all started here for Pooran, he has come into the limelight with his blistering knocks in the CPL. It was no different in the last season as well, where he scored 267 runs from 10 innings for Tridents. This time around, he may have changed the team to Guyana Amazon Warriors, but nothing different is expected of him. He has been in some prolific form over the past few months were he piled on runs in the World Cup and continued it through T20 Blast and through the India series as well.
After his heroics in the home series against England early in the year, Hetmyer hasn’t lived up to the expectations on him in the series that followed. But when it comes to CPL, he has been a consistent performer over the past few seasons. He was the leading run-scorer for Warriors in the previous season where he scored 440 runs from 12 innings. He may not be in great form but once he gets into his grooves he is sure to be the game changer the team needs.
