Playing for the pride
It is a clash between the 2 teams who have very well underperformed than what was expected out of them, which eventually made them to occupy the final 2 spots in the points table. With the way West Indies started the tournament (huge victory over Pakistan) there was naturally more expected out of them but they failed to live up to the expectations. Afghanistan have been severely hampered by their off field activities and it clearly reflected on their performances too.
Darren Bravo is expected to come back into the playing XI once again, after a couple of not so impressive performances from the replacement player Sunil Ambris. Shannon Gabriel had a couple of forgettable outings and is likely to be replaced by Ashley Nurse. Afghanistan will once again not field the same XI in consecutive matches as Dawlat Zadran is set to replace the injured Hamid Hassan.
There is no rain forecast for the day but it is expected to be a little cloudy. Like the last game in this venue, spinners will get more purchase especially later in the day.
He usually is a consistent batsman for the West Indies, but in the last few games his form was indifferent which was one of the reasons for Windies’ poor show. He is expected to take a bit of time initially but a high score is expected from him today.
This will be the final World Cup game for ‘The Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle and he would be desperate to end it on a high. Apart from a couple of handy knocks against Pakistan and New Zealand, he hasn’t set the stage on fire in the tournament. If he gets through the initial tough overs against Mujeeb ur Rahman, he has a great chance of finishing his World Cup career on a high.
Ashgar Afghan batted with real purpose against Pakistan. He was attacking the bowlers from the word go and also planned his calculated attacks perfectly well. At a point when Afghanistan were fielding, it looked like he took charge of captaincy and was very much involved in the thick of things. As a former captain, he is making every effort to avoid embarrassment and trying to make their fans happy at least once in the tournament.
