Date & Time: on Tuesday, 9th April; 08:00pm IST
Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
The two most successful teams of this season face each other on Tuesday to determine who is better than the best.
Kolkata Knight Riders have been the most settled side so far in the season, but the slim pace attack is their only weakness as a team. They have been competitive in every match and at times dominant as well. The only loss the team acquired had gone into the super over.
On the other hand, Chennai is not too far away from a settled side. The only big concern they have is bowling in the death overs, which is where Kolkata have turned games so far in the season with scoring more runs than any other team. Hence, it is important for Chennai to kill the match before the slog overs just so they can be on the winning side.
Both sides are unlikely to change their playing XI for this contest.
The surface is known to aid spinners any given day and pacers can exploit the slowness with cutters. Since it is an 8 PM starter on Tuesday, it’s going to be hard for spinners to grip the ball with dew, which is expected to play a huge role in the match.
M. S. Dhoni
The Captain cool is in good form in the season, as he played crucial knocks whenever the team needed it the most. His record at the venue is quite similar to his present form, as he scored 137 runs in the last four games at this venue. Although it will be interesting to see whether Dhoni continues his good form on Tuesday, since he has a mediocre record against Kolkata bowlers in the last five matches he has played against them. It is to be noted that he has been dismissed by Kuldeep twice and Chawala once during that period.
The veteran batsman is yet to come up with his best in this season. We might see his best against Kolkata as he is too good a player to be out of form for long. His record against Kolkata might aid him in that aspect, as he scored 152 runs at a strike rate of 172 in the last 5 encounters against their bowlers. But, looks like he has to overcome the Narine threat first, as Naraine got the better of him thrice in the last five encounters.
He has become a beast as far as slog overs are concerned. He is just destroying all the bowlers around the park with his brutal hits. His record against Chennai bowlers is not any different either, as he scored 185 runs at a strike rate of 215 in the last five games against them. The only bowler, who can stop him is Tahir, who has dismissed Russell twice in the last five encounters.
The left arm Chinaman has a good record against Chennai batsmen. In the last five matches against Chennai batsmen, he has had an impressive strike rate of 12. He also dismissed Dhoni, Rayudu, and Raina twice each in this period. We can expect nothing but the best from him on Tuesday as well.
He is in good form of late and he is among the top 5 wicket-takers of the season so far. He bowled most of his overs in the first 10 overs this season, but on Tuesday Dhoni might use him the other way around just to counter Russell. He got the better of Russell and Karthick twice each in the last 5 encounters.
